I used to make up stories about my mother and my dad. ”7 Meanwhile, her mother, Lee, was struggling just to make ends meet. There was no money left in the family budget for any extras. Oprah wanted to play tennis, go to the movies, or share a pizza, the kinds of activities her private-school friends took for granted. Yearning to be like everyone else in her school, Oprah started stealing money from her mother’s purse. Fueled by the smoldering anger over the sexual abuse and by the chaos in her living situation, Oprah’s rebellion turned into a self-destructive wildfire.

7 A deeply religious woman, Lee made sure Oprah attended the Buffalo United Methodist Church every Sunday. The services lasted from morning until late afternoon, often in a room stifling with southern heat. Children had to sit quietly, with no fidgeting. It was not an easy task, especially for Oprah, a child filled with energy and curiosity. Lee believed strongly in the importance of education. Even though she was not formally educated herself, she wanted Oprah to grow up reading the Bible. So when most three-year-olds were just learning to identify colors, Oprah was reading, adding, subtracting, writing, and putting Scripture to memory.
