The primary part of such a coronagraph is an objective lens that scatters the smallest possible amount of light. Traditionally, this is a singlet lens, made from a highly selected piece of crown glass in which no bubbles, striations, or other imperfections are apparent. The lens need not be large—4- to 6-in. diameter is used in most coronographs—but it must be exceptional in its freedom from dust and dirt, scratches, and any light-scattering flaws in the glass.

I t is designed to take advantage of the low sky brightness at such altitudes by placing external occulting disks to shade the primary objective lens. The sequence of occulting disks reduces the diffracted light to less than t h a t from a single disk. Courtesy High Altitude Observatory. C. Coronal Observing from Above the Earth's Atmosphere 41 may be considered purely coronal in origin, observations of the sun in the very short wavelengths of the solar spectrum are essentially observations of the corona.

At an altitude of 40,000 ft the two are of comparable brightness, 38 2. Observational Techniques Fig. 11. Filtergrams of the λ 5303 monochromatic corona. The coronal pictures are shown in the upper part of each frame, with the corresponding H a prominence photographs directly underneath. The similarity but lack of identity between the loop systems in the two wave lengths is quite apparent. Not quite so apparent is the correspondence between the long, low quiescent prominence to the left of the center of the arc in each frame and the gap in λ 5303 emission.
