The primary part of such a coronagraph is an objective lens that scatters the smallest possible amount of light. Traditionally, this is a singlet lens, made from a highly selected piece of crown glass in which no bubbles, striations, or other imperfections are apparent. The lens need not be large—4- to 6-in. diameter is used in most coronographs—but it must be exceptional in its freedom from dust and dirt, scratches, and any light-scattering flaws in the glass.
I t is designed to take advantage of the low sky brightness at such altitudes by placing external occulting disks to shade the primary objective lens.
