Those traditions have themselves had considerable influence on how sources have been approached, and how different categories of source have been perceived, interpreted, valued – and published. Moreover, the history of this period was being written from the twelfth century, and in many ways long before. Its historiographical traditions are deep, and blur the apparently simple distinction between primary source and historiography. Early historiographical concerns had a major impact on what sources were once produced and which now survive.

It is an approach that is arguably part of the much wider phenomenon of new cultural history, and it has characterized a swathe of important work on this period across Europe. It is central, for example, to the work on ethnogenesis that has dominated study of the late antique and earliest medieval centuries since World War II. ” Ethnicity raises questions about group and individual identity, and emphasizes this as malleable, fluid, situational, and subjective. Its impact has been felt on all studies of group formation and movement, and is clear in this volume in chapters on the arrival of “Anglo-Saxons” as well as vikings (see chapters 4, 13, and 14).
