Selwyn, who in his exhaustive analysis of types of material current in the mid-ist cent. Church distinguished (i) hymns and embryonic credal forms, (ii) a homiletic or hortatory document compiled to assist evangelists and teachers, (iii) catechetical paradigms, and (iv) sayings of Christ. There can be little doubt that his approach was in principle correct, for (as C. Spicq has aptly remarked) i Peter is pre-eminently'the epistle of tradition'; his chief mistakes were to think too much in terms of written documents and to propose an artificial degree of schematization for the ancient catechism.
